“Satinder Kaur Sabharwal, left for heavenly abode on 9th Aug 2020. She is at peace.
Her survivorship story was published earlier this year at Breast Cancer Hub (https://www.breastcancerhub.org/heroes-blog/satinder-sabharwal) where she spoke about being positive, trusting the medicine and never losing faith, which for her was her God, her Waheguru. It was not long after that story was published that she had to go through a surgery which had obviously left her weak, but not dispirited. She was physically weak, yet mentally strong. In the video, speaking to fellow survivors, she emphasized the importance of being positive & trusting the medicine. Then due to the pandemic her movements were further restricted to inside the home. Her recovery was in the right direction, albeit slow. The surgery led to other complications such as UTI and anemia which would prove to be fatal at the end, ironically not cancer.
She was an epitome of drawing strength from the Lord, something she continued to do till her last breath. That was her constant, her ground zero. Everyone says she went through so much trouble all these years, her body took so much toll, all of which is true. Yet, in all these hardships she did not forget Him. We don’t remember her hardships so much because she wouldn’t mention them so much. Always a smiling face. Always a beaming face. You could forget that she’s in a constant fight, you wouldn’t want to pity her ever; in fact she had so many engagements with all kinds of people since her zeal always overshadowed her ailments and she never appeared unwell to anyone.
And that is the constant reminder she has left for all of us – life will throw all kinds of hardships and you need to greet them with a smile. Sometimes all it takes to ruin our day is a flat tire, a toothache, or a phone without battery. We start to question our choices based on trivial, non-essential things and lose perspective in a heartbeat. For her, perspective was always very clear. Having gone through a multitude of treatments, multiple rounds of surgeries, chemotherapy etc. her body may have been bruised, but her soul only became stronger. Her resolve to get better after every round was the same.
This time it was no different. She had resolved to get better. She had talked about getting out of the house, about visiting different places. But the anemia got the better of her. On the fateful morning of 9th Aug, she woke up short of breath & in discomfort. Within a few minutes her heart gave away to the constant pressure it had to endure. She passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones she loved most dearly.
The reason we want to share her story with the world is to remind you are not alone in this fight. Whatever big or small you are struggling with, it will get better, if you resolve to. And to those fighting cancer, the reminder is it was not cancer that took her life. She had beat cancer. Not once, not twice, 5 times! If you resolve to get better and trust the treatment, you will only feel a positive effect. Surround yourself with positivity & positivity only. That doesn’t mean ignoring the difficult moments of the day, it means accepting them as facts & overcoming them with constant confirmation that “I am well. I am under the constant care of my Lord, my loved ones. I choose to be happy & feel healthy.” Be open & receptive to the love & support of your spouse, family & friends, as she was. She loved to host people, give them presents at occasions, congratulate them on their achievements. Whatever her pain, she continued to do these things. She surrounded herself with people whom she loved, cared for & that brought joy. The phone did not stop ringing for a week after she had left. She left an indelible mark on not just her relatives, but friends & neighbours as well, who knew they could count on her constant warmth.
For those who have lost loved ones to cancer, we hope that you find your peace in their sweet memories. This is something that we are discovering everyday too with the hope that her light, her ever radiant & smiling face continues to guide us on a virtuous path that she was a model of.
We are sharing a few chosen moments from the past that capture for us the eternal warmth that she radiated and her infectious high-spirited nature. “
